How to Regrout a Shower – Explained in Detail

by | May 30, 2024 | Leaking Showers, Tile & Grout Cleaning

If the grout in your shower shows signs of mould or mildew, it’s likely leaking. When left unattended for long periods, even small leaks can cause significant damage to your shower, so it’s essential to repair them sooner rather than later to avoid costly repairs.

Before you get started, consider whether you can regrout the shower yourself or whether it’s best to engage an experienced local shower regrouting company.

How to Regrout a Shower - Do-It-Yourself

To regrout a shower, follow these steps:

  1. Purchase a reputable shower grout product and the necessary tools and equipment. For starters, you’ll need a grout saw or utility knife, mildew remover or bleach solution, grout float head, sponges, caulking gun, silicone and grout sealant.
  2. Remove the old grout using the grout saw or utility knife. Dig out as much old, cracked, or mouldy grout as possible between the tiles. Vacuum or clean up any debris.
  3. Clean the area thoroughly by scrubbing with a mildew remover or bleach solution to remove any mould, mildew, or soap scum residue. Rinse and allow to dry, leaving the grout lines slightly damp.
  4. Prepare the new grout according to the manufacturer’s instructions, aiming for a toothpaste-like consistency.
  5. For shower floors or broad grout lines wider than 3mmm, use sanded grout, which is more durable.
  6. Using a grout float held at a 45° angle, apply the new grout, forcing it into the grout lines.
  7. Avoid leaving excess grout on the tile faces.
  8. Allow the grout to set for 20-30 minutes, and use a damp sponge to remove any excess grout from the tile surfaces, rinsing frequently.
  9. Once the grout has fully cured (typically 24-72 hours), apply a grout sealant to help protect against future staining and moisture penetration.
  10. Finally, use a flexible silicone to caulk the corners and seams where the tiles meet walls, floors, or fixtures.

Regrouting a shower by yourself can be expensive, time-consuming and messy. For this reason, most people decide to engage a reputable tile regrouting company rather than DIY.

The Advantages of Using a Tile Regrouting Company

There are several advantages to using a local tile regrouting company –

Leak Detection

Reputable shower regrouting companies will use moisture meters to detect leaks within your shower walls. This removes the guesswork and allows them to locate all leaks, even those that are not visible to the naked eye.

Convenience/Time

Learning a new process and purchasing all required equipment and products can be time-consuming. Not to mention the additional time it would take to complete the repairs compared to someone with considerable experience.

By engaging a professional, you’ll save significant time and stress with peace of mind that the job will completed quickly, accurately, and hassle-free. Most showers can be regrouted in only a few hours, so you can sit back and relax, knowing your shower will be leak-free and ready to use within 24-48 hours.

Cost

Most people elect for DIY repairs to save money. However, you may only save a few hundred dollars by the time you purchase all required products, equipment and tools. Regrouting companies purchase grout at wholesale rates and will often use higher-quality commercial-grade equipment and products unavailable to DIY customers.

Results

Even the most enthusiastic DIY repairers are unlikely to achieve the same long-lasting results that you’ll receive from an experienced regrouting company. After repairing hundreds, if not thousands, of leaking showers, they have the experience and knowledge to accurately and efficiently repair even the most tricky projects. They will also have direct access to other industry professionals, such as plumbers, if different areas of your shower are also found to be leaking.
